Major League Hacking 2018 Hackathon Season

November 18-19, 2017

River Dell High School - Oradell, NJ

River Dell's Second Annual Hackathon

In December 2016, students from River Dell High School organized “Hack River Dell” an exclusively student-run hackathon. As a part of Major League Hacking’s Local Hack Day 2016, Hack River Dell brought together students from the local community to hack together and build some insanely cool projects. With Hack River Dell 2017, the team looks to continue the tradition of excellence set by last year’s inaugural event.

FAQs

What is a hackathon?

A hackathon is a coding event in which teams "hack" together to create an awesome project like a game, website, or app. Hackathons are a great way to learn more about coding, meet new people, and most importantly build something cool! Check out "What is a hackathon?" by Dave Fontenot to learn more.

How long is Hack River Dell 2017?

Unlike last year, Hack River Dell 2017 is a full, 24-hour hackathon! The event formally kicks off at 9:00 AM, with hacking starting at 10:00 AM. Teams then have about 24 hours to work on their hacks. Make sure you arrive for check-in, which starts at 8:00 AM.

Who can attend Hack River Dell?

Hack River Dell is open for all high school students in grades 9-12, and it doesn't matter where you live or what school you attend. Please note that we are unable

How much is it to attend?

Hack River Dell is completely free, including free food, swag, and prizes! Please note that we cannot reimburse travel expenses this year.

What if I don't know how to code?

No problem! The goal of Hack River Dell is to get everyone involved, and we especially encourage beginners to attend. Hackathons are great places to come and learn more about coding for first timers. Hack River Dell has many workshops where you can learn, and there will be mentors that can provide assistance when you need it.

How do teams work?

At Hack River Dell, you can either come and hack on your own or come with a team. While there is no limit to the number of people on a team, we recommend teams of up to 5 people. However, if your team wins, we will only be able to award up to five prizes per team regardless of your actual team size. If you want to work with a team, but don't have one, we can help find one for you at the event. But, do not be discouraged to work on your own if you want to.

What should I bring?

You need to bring a laptop or desktop computer, acceptable photo ID (i.e. a school ID, driver's license, passport, etc.), phone, charging cables, powerstrips, and any hardware you plan on using. If you need to use equipment that requires proper ventilation, such as a soldering iron, please contact us. Most importantly, do not forget to bring the signed waiver, this will be emailed to you if you register. You will NOT be admitted into the event without one!

When can I start my hack?

You may start working on your hack as soon as hacking time is officially started at 10:00 AM in order to qualify for judging. Any hacks that were started before the hacking time starts will be disqualified.

How and when do I submit my hack?

Submissions open on Devpost on Sunday at 10:00 AM promptly, and are open until 11:00 AM. You can, however, continue to work on your presentation or your hack after 11:00 AM.

What do I need for the Expo?

You should have some sort of demonstration of your hack during the expo (e.g. PowerPoint presentation, hands-on demo, or whatever is applicable for your hack).

What can I win?

At Hack River Dell, there are many different ways you can win cool prizes, whether it's the grand prize, a mini-event, or a giveaway. However, we're keeping our prizes under wraps for now. But, we'll just say they're pretty cool.
